What are ChatGPT and Claude?
Both are AI chatbots — tools you type a question or task into, and they respond in plain English. They can write, explain, summarise, answer questions, help with code, and much more.
ChatGPT is made by OpenAI and launched in late 2022. It’s the tool that kicked off the AI chatbot boom and is still the most widely recognised name in the space.
Claude is made by Anthropic and is ChatGPT’s closest rival. It’s quieter in the media but consistently rated highly by people who use both regularly.
Both have a free version and a paid plan. Both are available in the UK with no VPN or workarounds needed.

ChatGPT — PlainAI Review
Best for: people who want an all-in-one tool with image generation, voice mode, and web search in one place.
ChatGPT is the Swiss Army knife of AI tools. The free tier is genuinely useful — more so than most competitors. You get access to GPT-4o (a powerful model), basic image generation, and voice mode, all without paying a penny.
On the paid Plus plan (£20/mo), you unlock more advanced models including o1 — which is particularly good at step-by-step reasoning and complex problems. Web browsing is more reliable on the paid tier too, making it a solid research companion.
Where ChatGPT can feel less polished is in long-form writing. Responses can occasionally feel a little formulaic — structured and competent, but missing some of the natural flow you get from Claude. It also has a tendency to over-explain when brevity would serve better.
For UK users: works perfectly. Charges in GBP. GDPR-compliant. You can opt out of your conversations being used to train the model in the settings.

Claude — PlainAI Review
Best for: writing, longer documents, nuanced tasks, and anyone who wants responses that feel more like a thoughtful human wrote them.
Claude is made by Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI researchers with a focus on AI safety. It’s less well-known than ChatGPT but often preferred by writers, marketers, and anyone who deals with a lot of text.
The quality of Claude’s writing output is noticeably different — responses tend to feel more considered, less mechanical. It handles long documents well (it can read and work with large files), and it’s particularly good at tasks that require nuance: rewriting awkward sentences, summarising complex topics plainly, or drafting something that needs to sound like a real person wrote it.
The free tier is more limited than ChatGPT’s — you’ll hit daily message limits if you use it heavily. But Claude Pro at £18/mo is slightly cheaper than ChatGPT Plus and gives you access to Claude Opus, the most capable model in the range.
One thing to note: Claude currently can’t generate images, and its web browsing is available but not as central to the product as ChatGPT’s. If those features matter to you, ChatGPT has the edge.
For UK users: works perfectly. Charges in GBP. GDPR-compliant. Conversations are not used for training by default on the paid plan.

Verdict — which should you use?
The short answer
Use ChatGPT if you want one free tool that does everything — including images and voice. Use Claude if you write a lot and want output that sounds more human. If you’re paying for a plan, Claude Pro is slightly better value.
Choose ChatGPT if you:
- Want image generation included
- Do a lot of web research
- Prefer a larger ecosystem of plugins and integrations
- Use voice mode regularly
Choose Claude if you:
- Do a lot of writing — emails, blogs, reports, summaries
- Work with long documents or need to process lots of text
- Want responses that feel natural rather than robotic
- Are on a budget — Claude Pro is £2/mo cheaper
Honestly? Most power users end up using both. They’re different tools that happen to overlap. If you’re just starting out, try the free version of each for a week and see which feels right for the way you work.
